Now touted as a classic, this Rajkumar Hirani film brought back Sanjay Dutt in the titular role of a lovable goon once again into the limelight after a slump in his career. Although Sanjay Dutt finally played the role of Munnabhai to the perfect ‘T’, it was first offered to Shah Rukh Khan who despite loving the script had no immediate dates to give for the film. Sanjay was then offered the role of the patient Zaheer which finally went to Jimmy Sheirgill (superbly essayed). Today one cannot envisage anyone else but Sanjay Dutt in the titular role. This film was also Sunil Dutt’s last screen appearance and the famous ‘jadoo ki jhappi’ between the real father and son Sunil Dutt & Sanjay Dutt is a treat for the viewers, bringing tears to one’s eyes.
But what stuck with the viewers was the fantastic
comedy timing and coordination between Munna and his sidekick Circuit played
brilliantly by Arshad Warsi. Their jodi and chemistry are still on every film
lover’s lips and not to forget ‘Jadoo ki jhappi’.
The film focuses on the issues of admission in a
hospital and behaviour of the hospital staff towards their patients. Hirani
takes us through this wonderful journey loosely based on Robin Williams’ Patch
Adams.
Another character etched in the memory is that of
the highly irritable Dr.Asthana outstandingly portrayed by Boman Irani. The
leading lady Gracy Singh was first-rate and also gave a restrained and graceful
performance as Chinki. The music was by Annu Malik who delivered a couple of
hummable numbers like ‘Chamm chamm chamm’ and the foot-tapping title song ‘M
bole toh’ and not to forget the sexy ‘Seekh le’.
Munnabhai MBBS was another turning point in Sanjay
Dutt’s career after Vaastav and added another feather in his cap of brilliant
performances. He just nailed this one.
This emotional film interlaced with dollops of
humour and witty one-liners is one of the best films and hence deserves the
ovation it has garnered over the last two decades. Cult!
