Welcome to apna Riverdale where the boys are not so nice and the girls are all sugar and spice. For someone who was weaned on a staple diet of Archie comics and Archie digests through the 80s, The Archies is a joy to behold. Taking you for a mirthful ride back in time to the early 1960s, Zoya Akhtar and company pay tribute to the Anglo-Indian community in India and their contribution in nation-building through this musical rom-com based on the legendary Archies comic book series.

Archie (Agastya Nanda) is the lovable Casanova of Riverdale with an ever-roving eye who can’t decide who he loves more (Veronica Lodge (Suhana Khan) or Betty Cooper (Khushi Kapoor). Best friend Mihir Ahuja (Jughead Jones), Aditi Dot Saiga (Ethel), Yuvraj Menda (Dilton Doiley) make up the rest of the gang he hangs out with.

Even as Archie is all set to leave for higher studies to England, a serious issue rears its ugly: redevelopment of the town’s biggest asset Green Park with local tycoon Hiram Lodge (Alyy Khan) planning a grand hotel to bring in the dough. All the friends rally around to save their beloved park with the town’s residents giving them the much-needed support.

With three star kids making their debut in The Archies each coming from legendary film lineages, the film could well have had an overcrowded canvas with the supporting cast as add-ons. But kudos to the genius of Zoya Akhtar and her team, each of the debuting stars and the other cast members have equal screen time with no “favourite” games being played.

Suhana has the saas and trademark SRK attitude, Khushi has the acting chops of Sridevi and Agastya, Big B’s grandson fits in perfectly as the confused and affable Archie.

The music is foot-tapping with all the young stars more than ever nimble on their twinkle toes. Shot in Mumbai and picturesque Ooty, the hill station never looked better.
