Killers of the Flower Moon marks the 10th collaboration between Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro and the sixth between Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Scorsese’s films are long but it’s his ability as a director to make a film with a nearly four-hour runtime feel like it’s just two and a half hours long. Credit goes to his editor Thelma Schoonmaker, but it’s the director who is in charge of the editing. There’s no doubt that Scorsese is among the world’s finest filmmakers and he proves it again with Killers of the Flower Moon.

When oil is discovered in 1920s Oklahoma under Osage Nation land, the Osage people are murdered one by one—until the FBI steps in to unravel the mystery.

A monumental effort - be it the costumes, set design, sound design, cinematography, acting, or directing the film is about the American Dream. It is a meditative look at greed and the overall cruelty that men inflict on others for their own profit, happiness, or agenda. It’s about the depravity and the root cause of that depravity. The film, very intelligently, never judges a character, it’s up to us to judge the character.

The film begins with a beautiful shot of oil covering the members of the Osage community. It’s a beautiful shot, no doubt about it, but the somewhat muted colour-grade gives it an ominous feel, much like the rest of the film. The imagery is gorgeous with Scorsese flexing his ability as a storyteller by using sound and imagery in the best way possible.  The soundtrack is excellent with some great music by Robbie Robertson.

A masterclass in filmmaking by Scorsese, and a masterclass in acting by Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, and Lily Gladstone, Killers of the Flower Moon is a gorgeous and bleak epic that deserves to be seen by everyone.
