An incoherent and utterly boring mess

Cast: Leslie Odom Jr, Ann Dowd, Ellen Burstyn, Jennifer Nettles, Norbert Leo Butz, Olivia Marcum, Lidya Jewett

Rating: 1*

The Exorcist: Believer feels like the Imagine Dragons song because of what it’s implying, and exactly like the song, is a mess and trash. The film lacks the scares, the direction, and the screenplay needed to make an effective horror film. David Gordon Green’s direction is slightly better than in Halloween Kills but it still makes for terrible viewing.

Coming to the story, since the death of his wife 12 years ago, Victor Fielding has raised their daughter, Angela on his own. But when Angela and her friend Katherine disappear in the woods, only to return three days later with no memory of what happened to them, it unleashes a chain of events that will force Victor to confront the nadir of evil and, in his terror and desperation, seek out the only person alive who has witnessed anything like it before, Chris MacNeil.

There are a lot of sound effects that are made to make the scared audience jump out of their skin but the “scary” sequences actually feel funny and bland. The film lacks emotional depth, and character development though the cinematography is up to mark. Except for Ellen Burstyn, all other performances are average bordering on the bad.

The Exorcist: Believer is just a waste of your precious time.
