Even the most perfect doll in the world, everyone’s dream come true can have an existentialist crisis. In her perfect world of Barbieland with multiple versions of Barbies and her boyfriend Ken (Ryan Gosling), Barbie (Margot Robbie) and her ilk are not mere plastic dolls but women of substance who rule their pink land as doctors and lawyers. The Kens just laze around having the time of their lives at the beach or on the dance floor. All is fine till Barbie starts getting thoughts of death and mortality and starts seeing blemishes on herself. Off she goes to the real world on Weird Barbie’s (Kate McKinnon) advice in search of the child who plays with her. This journey becomes a life-changing experience for her as she begins to question her very existence and her shortcomings and how she overcomes them. Ken who can’t seem to think beyond Barbie too learns to carve a separate identity for himself.
Director Greta Gerwig’s ode to the iconic doll is the first live-action Barbie film to hit the big screen as to date the doll only figured in animated videos and TV films. Backed by an ensemble cast in top form with a terrific Margot Robbie and a scene-stealing Ryan Gosling and excellent tracks, Barbie is a must-watch. Both the leads live and breathe the roles of Barbie and Ken respectively apart from looking like a million bucks.
