Mani Ratnam is an excellent filmmaker and
he’s proved himself to be one in a million. But in PS-2, his visual style
flourishes.
Ponniyin Selvan: Part II traces Arulmozhi
Varman’s journey to become Rajaraja I, the greatest ruler of the historic Chola
empire of South India.
This is one of the few times in Indian
cinema where the sequel outshines the original. The visuals are way better in
this film and so are the CGI and the performances with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan
and Vikram stealing the show.
This is a step up from what Ratnam did with
the first one in every single way. Cutting all the songs and playing them in
the background was an excellent choice on Ratnam’s part. Ratnam ties up so many
storylines masterfully.
Mani Ratnam is excellent but is not his very
best. The cinematography is excellent, color grading and performances are top-notch, with Aishwarya, Vikram and Karthi being the highlights. The pacing is on
point here with no scene feeling too long or unimportant unlike in the
original. A.R. Rahman's music is great.
A visual spectacle worth the wait and the
hype.
