Polite Society is Nida Manzoor’s feature-length
debut and it couldn’t be better. It’s quirky, funny, at times really intense and
most of all, it’s fun to watch. Everything from the colour scheme to the
cinematography embodies what being alive means. Even the excellently
choreographed fight sequences are darn funny, that it’s almost impossible to
keep a straight face watching then
Martial artist-in-training Ria Khan believes
she must save her older sister Lena from her impending marriage. After
enlisting the help of her friends, Ria attempts to pull off the most ambitious
of all wedding heists in the name of independence and sisterhood.
A slapstick action-comedy, the film is also
about the choices brown parents give to their children in terms of their career
choices which nearly everyone with brown parents will relate to. The pacing is
on point, with no shot feeling inconsequential and unimportant. The music is excellent,
the highlight being Mohammed Rafi’s Gulabi Ankhen used perfectly.
The performances are excellent, especially
Priya Kansara, Ritu Arya and Nimra Bucha’s.
Everything is perfect for a film like this.
Polite Society is a must-watch for everyone to enjoy.
