A modern masterpiece

Cast: Cate Blanchett, Nina Hoss, Noémie Merlant, Sophie Kauer, Julian Glover, Mark Strong, Sylvia Flote, Mila Bogojevic

Rating: 4/5

Tár is a simple film. There is no symbolism or metaphors scattered throughout the film which other filmmakers would have opted for – it is what meets the eye. But behind that simplicity is a masterclass in filmmaking since simplicity is often the hardest thing to achieve in cinema. Tod Field gives this film his all, be it in cinematography, direction sound design, or screenplay. There’s a reason why Scorsese said, “The ‘clouds lifted’ on cinema’s ‘dark days’ after I watched ’Tár’.” Yes, the film is extremely slow and bleak but it is also one of the most engaging films one can see. Cate Blanchett delivers her best performance to date. She embodies her character like no one else has ever done and for the whole runtime you forget that you are watching an actor act and that you are watching a film.

Tod Field’s direction is the best showcased in a film. His screenplay and sound design are the highlights. It is surprising that it did not get an Oscar nomination for best sound design.

Tár is a flawless film and a modern masterwork that deserves to be seen as one.
