Director Christopher Landon has his heart in the right place with this moving tale of a soul looking for closure and his bond with a teenager. Based on Geoff Manaugh’s short story ‘Ernest’ reminds of the 1995 fantasy thriller on the friendly ghost ‘Casper’.

The Presley family moves into an upscale house at a suspiciously low price. The younger son Kevin (Jahi) who is a bit of a problem child wanders into the attic only to encounter the resident ghost Ernest (David Harbour) who does his best to scare the daylights out of him. Forget scared Kevin instead bursts out laughing and starts filming him on his phone. He soon makes friends with Ernest who he discovers is dumb and has also lost his memory.

Kevin takes it upon himself to unearth Ernest’s past but he hadn't reckoned with the CIA swooping down on his family and the family turning into social media sensations after his video of Ernest goes viral.

Landon deftly handles the emotional bond that develops between the socially introverted teen and the ghost.  The unlikely friendship also makes Kevin more outgoing, improving his relationship with his dad, and also lands him a girlfriend in next-door neighbour Joy (Isabella Russo) who joins him on his mission to help Ernest.

A cameo by Jennifer Coolidge as TV medium Judy Ramona and Ernest's efforts to scare her out of the house is the icing on this entertaining cake.
