Kolkata: The fourth edition of the Behala Art Fest will be held from 3rd to 5th February 2023 at 14 no. bus stand, Behala. This year Behala Art Fest 2023 has also drawn artists from Bangladesh, the Philippines and Vietnam, giving this fest a global dimension.
Initiated by
founder-partner Behala Notun Sangha, the popular festival, one of the largest
public art festivals of the subcontinent, is convened by esteemed artist
Sanatan Dinda, while the chairperson is Sundeep Bhutoria.
This year’s edition
is based on a central concept titled `Unbound’ - referring to the human beings’
deep-seated urge for mukti or liberation from several layers of bondage,
social, political, and economic. The theme has inspired the participating
artists, about 18 of them, to rethink the concept with the utmost freedom and
execute the idea in visual forms and site-specific artworks going beyond conventional
mediums and elements. Paintings on the neighbourhood walls, graffiti, and
temporary structures have been created to showcase the installation arts.
This year’s fest is
dedicated to renowned filmmaker Ritwik Ghatak (1925–1976), while the walls of
one of the lanes is devoted to Mrinal Sen (1923–2018) to celebrate his
centenary year and Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin (1914–1976) is remembered for his
outstanding contribution to the social cause of art.
Two renowned
artist-teachers Prof Samindranath Majumdar (Kolkata) and Prof. Debraj Goswami (Vadodara)
are curating this fest as moderators while Prof Soumik Nandy Majumdar
(Santiniketan) is the conferee of this edition.
“I have an enduring passion for the arts, having worked closely with artists,
both celebrated and aspiring, and promoted their work through my various
initiatives. It is a pleasure to be associated with the fourth edition of the
Behala Art Festival where the theme will be expressed via diverse mediums, and
at various locations across the city,” said Sundeep Bhutoria, chairperson of
Behala Art Festival.
