A seminar on communal harmony was organised in Calcutta Girls’ College, Kolkata recently. The principal of the college, Dr. Satya Upadhyay spoke on the need for communal harmony in al educational institutions and also reiterated that the sole religion of all individuals is humanity. She said that discipline is one of the most important pillars of communal harmony which has to be practiced from within.
Women
have a major role to play here. If they perform all their duties with
discipline, then no force ever can damage or affect the society or the nation. In this light, the chief guest, the commanding
officer of 2 Bengal Girls Battalion, NCC, Col. Sunit Singh, focussed on the
need for NCC in all educational institutions. He said the need to have respect
and understanding for each other’s religion is the way the military operates.
He gave the example of the military forces which respect each other’s religions
and participate in all religious activities. The kind of discipline needed is
taught by the NCC. Moreover, he appealed to the students not to believe any
news on social media without proper verification.
Another
chief guest, Dr. Kumkum Chatterjee, retired faculty of the political science
department of Bethune College, focussed on the need for unity and communal
harmony. She stressed that there has to be an end to any differences with
regard to religion or race. The focus has to be on creating a communal balance
to create communal harmony.
The welcoming
address by given by Prof. Chandranath Saha of the political science department
while the vote of thanks was given by Prof. Mondrita Roy and Prof. Sheikh Raj
Ali.
