Simplicity and stellar performances soar

Cast: Amitabh Bachchan, Anupam Kher, Boman Irani, Sarika, Neena Gupta, Parineeti Chopra, Danny Denzongpa (special appearance)

Rating: 3.75*

Made with utmost simplicity, director Sooraj R Barjatya laces ‘Uunchai’ with so much of love and affection that one gets bowled over with the sheer innocence of his cinema. The film celebrates life with dollops of humour thrown in. The stellar cast makes Sooraj’s work even simpler in this road film about friends (read senior citizens) and their freedom even at their age and how friendship acts as a motivating factor to help them get redemption.

Bhupen (an adorable Danny Denzongpa as a Nepalese in a special appearance) celebrates his birthday with his best buddies, novelist Amit Shrivastava (a towering Amitabh Bachchan), a bookseller Om Sharma (the fantastic Anupam Kher) and Javed Siddiqui (a superb Boman Irani). He wants his friends to trek to the base camp of Mount Everest which is his dream. Unfortunately, after his birthday, Bhupen succumbs to a heart attack. It is now left to Amit, Om and Javed to fulfill Bhupen’s dream and also immerse his ashes at the Everest base camp. They are joined in their quest by a stranger, Mala Trivedi (a perfect Sarika).

Neena Gupta who essays the role of Javed’s wife Shabbo is a delight to watch and the chemistry between her and Boman Irani is so heartwarming. It’s great to see the brilliant Danny Denzongpa after a long hiatus. Just wish he could have played a major role in the film, though the entire story revolves around his character. Parineeti Chopra as the trekking guide Shraddha Gupta leaves a mark. Nafisa Ali Sodhi (guest appearance) as Amit’s wife Sumitra looks beautiful even at this age.

One of the highlights of the film is its breathtaking visuals (Manoj Kumar Khatoi) and the other is the song, Keti Ko.

A film that is sure to make you smile and cry at the same time.
