Entertaining rom-com
Starring: George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Kaitlyn
Dever, Maxim Bouttier
Rating: 3*
n an era when most rom-coms are either bad or go straight to a streaming service without ever being able to get a theatrical release, it is rare to find a rom-com that is both good and has got a theatrical release.
Two divorced parents, David, and Georgia
Cotton, travel to Bali after learning that their daughter, Lily, is planning to
marry Gede (Maxim Bouttier), a man whom she has just met. They decide to work
together to sabotage the wedding to prevent Lily from making the same mistake
they made 35 years ago.
George Clooney and Julia Roberts reunite
for this heartfelt and genuinely funny film after six years, their previous
film together being the 2016 thriller “Money Monster”. Their chemistry is what
makes this film good in every way, if not for their chemistry together on
screen this would be another one of those “Netflix rom-coms”. While Clooney is
the charismatic David, Roberts is the youthful Georgia.
Ol Parker has a track record of directing
heartfelt films (Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, Imagine Me & You, Now Is
Good) and Ticket to Paradise is no different. Parker’s direction is just what a
film like this needs as is the cinematography by Ole Bratt Birkeland. The score
by Lorne Balfe is good as well. The performances, excluding George Clooney and
Julia Roberts, don’t feel out of place, with the highlight being Kaitlyn Dever
as Lily.
There’s something in this film for
everyone, entertaining with its heart in the right place.
