Rishab Shetty delivers a film to Indian audiences that is rich in its world-building and mythology yet full of low-brow humour and masala.
Shiva, a tribal vagabond lives with his
mother in a hamlet, stays away from the traditional Daivaradhane and Bhoota
Kola legacy due to an unforgettable childhood incident. He is happy loafing
around with his friends and doing petty jobs for his landlord. When forest
officer Murali enters the scene, it gives a fresh dimension to the
man-vs-nature fight. Shiva tries to save the forest and gives it his all.
Shetty writes, directs, and stars in this
well-choreographed action-packed film that will blow the audiences with its
technicality. The screenplay is set in a believable yet far-from-reality
mythology and is full of popcorn entertainment. Shetty knows exactly when to
emphasize a scene and when not and when to cut away and when not to. The
cinematography by Arvind S. Kashyap is mind-blowing and gorgeous to look at
with excessive camera movements. The choreography is highly stylized, providing
the film with another level of superficiality required for this kind of film.
The performances are excellent all around
with the highlights being Rishab Shetty and Kishore who shine in their roles. What
lets down the film are the visual effects.
Kantara is a masala film best enjoyed on
the big screen.
