A film that tugs at your heartstrings

Starring: Dulquer Salmaan, Mrunal Thakur, Rashmika Mandanna, Tharun Bhascker, Sumanth and Gautham Vasudev Menon

Rating : 3.5*

Seeing Dulquer Salmaan (as Ram) on screen is always such a nice feeling that you invariably fall in love with him every time. Here too, it is no different. In the end, when you shed a tear or two for him, you know that his performance has touched you in the right places. Even Mrunal Thakur (as Sita Mahalakshmi / Princess Noorjahan) makes a promising Telugu debut. Director Hanu Raghavapudi makes a lot more than just a touching love story- he blends humanity, religion, boundaries, and war with utter finesse.

The film focuses on two timelines - 1964 & 1984. Afreen (Rashmika Mandanna in a striking special appearance), a Pakistan-origin student is sent to India with a 20-year-old letter through her deceased grandfather Pakistani Army Brigadier Tariq. The letter which was written by Indian Army Major Ram has to be handed over to Sita. Only then Afreen would be the beneficiary of her grandfather’s property. She takes the help of her college senior Balaji (Tharun Bhascker) in Hyderabad. Every person she meets on her quest to find Sita unravels a mystery surrounding Ram and Sita. We travel back from 1985 to 1964 where we see Lt. Ram posted on the snowy terrains of Kashmir along with his fellow soldiers - a dear friend Lt. Vikas Verma (Shatru), a stern commanding officer Major Selvan (the dependable Gautham Vasudev Menon) and a jealous officer Vishnu Sharma (played dramatically by Sumanth who becomes a Brigadier). When an All India Radio journalist who comes to interview the Indian Army learns that Ram is an orphan, she requests her listeners to write to him. Letters start pouring in, including one of the letters he receives from Sita, who admonishes him by writing that he is not an orphan and has a wife back home. Ram is taken aback and decides to meet Sita.

The romance shown between Ram and Sita is the charming old-world romance that is missing nowadays along with beautiful songs and brilliant cinematography. The interval point surprises one and all and from here the film does a volte-face completely.

Don’t miss Sita Ramam as it is one of the finest films to have come out this year
