With ‘Brahmastra Part One: Shiva’ Ayan Mukherjee has tried a different genre alongside keeping the tropes of the coming-of-age romance genre which he’s already known for.
Unfortunately, he tries to stuff too much
into his screenplay which slows down the pace of the film, especially in the
second half where the story doesn’t seem to progress any further than it did at
the end of the first half.
The story revolves around a DJ Shiva
(Ranbir) whose world turned upside down when he
discovers he has the power to control fire and has a connection to a secret
society of guardians.
The film has enough for everyone to find it
interesting. Ayan’s direction is good but he could have done much better especially since he had such a stellar cast at his disposal. The VFX is
mind-blowing and undoubtedly the best ever seen in any Bollywood
film. The film has too much of CGI,
which at first is really impressive but gets on the nerves like any MCU film.
The dialogues and the comedy tend to fall flat.
Where
performances are concerned Ranbir Kapoor is the heart and soul of the film while Mouni
Roy relives her Naagin role as the antagonist to good effect. Nagarjuna does
well in a cameo while Shah Rukh Khan stands out. Amitabh Bachchan gives a stoic
performance. Alia is not a showpiece and does justice to her meaty role and is
a perfect foil for Ranbir. Dimple Kapadia is wasted in an inconsequential special
role.
Brahmastra is a visual spectacle that
deserves to be seen in the theatre.
