The MoS for Home Affairs, Nisith Pramanik on Tuesday, claimed that there has been a lack of development in North Bengal for years, hinting that separate statehood demands will be given importance if people want it. This comes close on the heels of West Bengal's BJP president Dilip Ghosh extending support to MoS John Barla over the demand for a separate state for North Bengal last week,
While participating in the Shahid Samman Yatra, Pramanik said that the decision for separate statehood for North Bengal will be taken in keeping with public’s demand.“In a democracy, people are the most important factor, and keeping in mind people's sentiments, an appropriate decision will be taken,” the MoS for Home Affairs, told the media on Tuesday.
The North Bengal region is deprived of the required development. The allocation for a flyover in Kolkata does not even match the allocation in North Bengal, he claimed.“People’s sentiment is of prime importance to us and we will be supporting such as we are public representatives. There can be a demand for separate statehood. How feasible is the demand is reflected in the people’s sentiments and we pay respect to those sentiments,” he added.
On August 21, sitting beside BJP Alipurduar MP John Barla who in June demanded a separate of North Bengal, BJP chief Dilip Ghosh had also said that the party will soon think over this issue.
Responding to Pramanik’s reaction, Trinamool Congress spokesperson and state general secretary Kunal Ghosh said that Mamata Banerjee’s government has really worked hard for North Bengal's development. “Even as Railway Minister, Mamata Banerjee connected North Bengal with South and the rest of the country by initiating several railway projects. Pramanik’s claims are baseless. As a chief minister Banerjee, visited North Bengal several times and inaugurated several developmental projects and was always present during such developmental work,” Ghosh said.
