Over 25000 displaced due to post poll violence in state: Dilip Ghosh

Kolkata: The repercussions of the assembly poll results in West Bengal have led to the displacement of over 25,000 people from their homes in various parts of West Bengal in the past one month, said BJP state president Dilip Ghosh after a closed-door working committee meeting of the BJP on Tuesday.

The rampant post-poll violence and other related strategies were discussed in a meeting which was held by Ghosh in Kolkata. All state bearers, zonal observers, co-observers, youth wing, minority cell, kisan morcha, minority (SC, ST and OBC cell) units were part of the meeting to chalk out future plans on agitation programmes and hitting the streets once the lockdown is lifted.

Senior leaders have expressed their grave concern about the bloody violence that has been unleashed against their party workers in the state according to top-level party sources. A review of the state assembly poll results too was done in the meeting.

“The people have been displaced from their homes forcing them to flee to other districts and even outside the state. Some returned home but were displaced again. They have been assaulted, beaten up and their children tortured. Agri-crops have been captured in their absence. It is a precarious situation,” Ghosh pointed out.

“The party has got over 10,000 complaints in the last few days from the victims of political violence. In the past one month, before Mamata Banerjee took oath and after that, at least 40 party members have died,” Ghosh said, adding that people’s houses have been vandalized in various districts.

“Police are playing the role of mute spectators and are not even taking complaints from our party workers. The administration also has not taken any action. We have moved Calcutta High Court. The court has accepted the fact and taken the initiative to help the displaced people,” he added.

According to party sources, the district presidents will retain their positions. A Disciplinary Action Committee has been formed in the meeting, which will take action against all those party leaders and workers who have tarnished the image of the party in public.

Incidentally, BJP national Vice-President Mukul Roy and BJP leader Rajib Banerjee did not attend the meeting and were unreachable. Banerjee has expressed his displeasure about the BJP’s opposition to the TMC-led government in Bengal in a Facebook post.
