Kolkata: Sanjib Bandopadhyay IMD Director (East Zone) said, “On May 23 at around 11.30 pm, the low pressure will become a deep depression. It is now located 670 km from Digha and 590 kms from Paradwip. The movement will be North and North Westward. On Monday morning, it will transform into a cyclone located around 590 kms from Digha. A deep depression over East Central Bay will intensify into a “very severe cyclonic storm” and will cross between Paradwip in Odisha and Sagar Island in Bengal with a wind speed of 155-165 km per hour.”
“On May 26 evening, it will cross Paradwip and
Sagar Island with a wind speed of 155-165 km per hour. From May 26 evening to May
27, North and South 24 Parganas and East and West Midnapore districts will
witness heavy to very heavy rainfall,” Bandopadhyay added.
According
to a Special Bulletin by IMD, “Latest satellite imageries and Ocean Buoy
observations indicate that yesterday’s low pressure area which became
well marked over eastcentral Bay of Bengal in the same evening has
concentrated into a Depression over east-central Bay of Bengal and lay
centred about 560 km north-northwest of Port Blair (Andaman Islands), 590
km east-southeast of Paradip (Odisha), 690 km south-southeast of
Balasore (Odisha) and 670 km south-southeast of Digha (West Bengal).”
“It is very likely to move north-northwestwards and intensify into a
Cyclonic Storm by 24th May morning and further into a Very Severe Cyclonic
Storm during the subsequent 24 hours. It would continue to move
north-northwestwards, intensify further and reach Northwest Bay
of Bengal near West Bengal and north Odisha coasts by 26th May morning,
it said.
It is very likely to cross north Odisha - West Bengal between Paradip
and Sagar islands by evening of 26th May as a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm.
