Kolkata: The West Bengal government on Saturday announced a complete lockdown for two weeks starting from Sunday, May 16, 6 am till Monday, May 30, 6 pm to deal with the rapid surge in Corona cases. All offices and educational institutions will be shut along with transport services, including local trains, the Kolkata Metro and inter-state bus services, the government has said.
Only emergency services will be
allowed, the state's notification says, adding that groceries, shops and markets
selling essential items like vegetables, fruits, bread, milk, etc will be open
between 7 am to 10 am, the West Bengal Chief Secretary, Alapan Bandyopadhyay
said. Schools, colleges, ferry services, gyms, cinema halls, shopping malls,
salons, swimming pools too will remain shut. Movement of private cars, taxis
and auto-rickshaws too have been restricted.
Sweetmeat shops will be open between 10 am and 5
pm. Petrol pumps and banks will be allowed to function between 10 am to 2 pm
with limited staff. Industries will be closed but tea gardens will be allowed
to function with 50 percent strength.
No cultural, political, academic, administrative,
or religious events and functions will be allowed and no outdoor congregations
will be permitted between 9 pm and 5 am, the government has said. "No more
than 50 people will be allowed at wedding functions," Bandyopadhyay said.
The state reported 20,846 fresh Covid cases and 136
deaths on Friday.
