Kolkata: Trinamul Congress minister Sovondeb Chattopadhyay sent in his resignation as MLA to the Speaker Biman Banerjee on Friday afternoon to vacate the Bhowanipore seat. The West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee is likely to contest by-poll from the seat, TMC sources said.
Banerjee was defeated by her former aide Suvendu Adhikari from the Nandigram seat, with a
small margin in the 2021 assembly polls. There are speculations that Chattopadhyay
may either contest from another seat and continue as cabinet minister or he may
be sent to Rajya Sabha.
Chattopadhyay is a minister in Mamata Banerjee’s cabinet. Following his
resignation, he said, “I want Mamata Banerjee to contest from this seat. This
is her seat for many years.”
TMC sources said that the party leadership has decided that Banerjee is
likely to contest from her traditional seat, which she has won twice.
Chattopadhyay said that he had resigned following the party’s decision. However,
he didn’t give any other details saying that he would do whatever the party
will ask him to do.
