Kolkata: Yaas will make landfall on Wednesday, May 26 between Paradeep in Odisha and Sagar Island in West Bengal near Balasore, the MET department said today. “East Midnapore and parts of South 24 Parganas will be the most affected due to the severe cyclone with gales having a wind-speed of 155-165 kmph. After the landfall the cyclone will be directed towards Jharkhand,” IMD Director (East Zone) Sanjib Bandhopadhyay said. Kolkata and the adjoining areas will also receive heavy to very heavy rainfall with wind-speed going up to 80-90 kmph.
“The Union Home
Minister, Amit Shah in a meeting held earlier today over video-conference promised
to give over Rs 600 crore to Odisha and Andhra Pradesh and Rs 400 crore to West
Bengal as advance assistance. Despite being a big state with higher population
density, West Bengal was given a lesser amount,” Mamata Banerjee complained.
Meanwhile, the West Bengal Chief
Minister said her state administration has started evacuating people to 4000
relief and cyclone centres set up by the government. “We have targeted the evacuation of 10 lakh people, especially those in East Midnapore, North and South 24
Parganas,” she said.
