A roller-coaster emotional thriller
Cast: Abir Chatterjee, Ritabhari Chakraborty, Koushani Mukherjee, Shiboprasad Mukherjee, Rajat Ganguly, Pradeep Bhattacharya.
Rating: 3.5*
Director duo Nandita Roy & Shiboprosad deliver full-on cat-and-mouse entertainment with never a dull moment. The extravagantly laid out cop-robber saga has the audience rooting for the underdog. The amount of claps and seetis that the audience gave to the underdog is simply overwhelming. On top of that the performances by Shiboprosad (brilliant) and Abir Chatterjee (excellent) enhance the film to another level.
The film is set between 1997-2005 in a notorious village of West Bengal-Chhayanchrapur. A simple cashier, Bikram Pramanik (Shiboprosad) at a jute factory is wrongly accused of murdering the union leader of the factory. In the police station, he gets beaten up mercilessly by the then SI Sumanta Ghoshal (Abir) despite the former pleading innocence. He is sentenced to 5 years in prison where he meets Salim Bhai (a good Rajat Ganguly) who teaches him the business tricks of bank robberies. On coming out of jail, Bikram becomes one of West Bengal's deadliest bank robbers (who robbed banks in a mere 4 minutes) and also Ghoshal's nemesis thus starting a cat-and-mouse game.
Pradeep Bhattacharya as Khuro, the senior most in Bikram's gang is adorable. There are a lot of poignant scenes between him and Shiboprosad. Koushani Mukherjee as Jhimli, Bikram's love interest and later wife is wonderful but sometimes her diction becomes questionable. As Pori Ghoshal, the bipolar wife of Sumanta, Ritabhari Chakraborty is sometimes over-the-top but yet delivers a good performance. Her disturbed mind trapped in her imagination has been portrayed quite effectively by her. Rajat Ganguly is superb as Salim Bhai.
The film is a biopic and is inspired by true events. In the post-credit scenes, we get to see the man himself who is now leading a retired life. The film is very well written and the chase sequences are exciting. Yes, the film becomes melodramatic in the second half but manages to salvage itself quite fast. Despite Shiboprosad hogging the limelight, it is also Abir who stands tall with a strong performance. He performs the role of a tormented person quite nicely.
The rural culture is also very well depicted and all kudos to the director duo in presenting us with this emotional roller-coaster thriller.
