Kolkata: After the western coast of the country was ravaged by Cyclone Tauktae, leaving behind a trail of devastation in Gujarat and Maharashtra, it’s the turn of the eastern coast to face another cyclonic storm. The Central Government has issued warnings for West Bengal and Odisha ahead of Cyclone Yaas’ projected impact on May 26.
The Indian
Meteorological Department has said a low-pressure area is likely to form over
the Bay of Bengal on Saturday which will intensify into a cyclonic storm by
Monday. The cyclonic storm is likely to move in a northwest direction and reach
the Odisha-West Bengal coast on May 26.
The head of Regional
Meteorological Centre in Kolkata, Dr Sanjib Bandyopadhyay, has asked West
Bengal fishermen not to venture into the sea from May 23 evening. Those who are
in the deep sea have been advised to return to the coast by May 23 morning.
West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and
Andaman and Nicobar Islands have been directed to stock up health facilities
with essential medicines and supplies to meet any exigencies in the wake of
Cyclone Yaas which is expected to make landfall on Wednesday.
A high alert
has been sounded in 14 districts of Odisha. The Indian Navy and the Indian
Coast Guard have been asked to be prepared to face any eventualities. The
Indian Railways has cancelled 22 special trains, which were to run next week in
West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh belt.
Widespread
rains are expected in Andaman and Nicobar Islands and districts of the east
coast that may cause inland flooding.
The National
Disaster Response Force has begun setting up its teams in West Bengal and
Odisha. Some of the NDRF teams sent to undertake evacuation, rescue and
restoration work in states affected by Cyclone Tauktae are being called back.
