With huge Covid surge, Maharashtra likely to consider lockdown as Health Minister Rajesh Tope said on Tuesday that with increasing caseloads every day, all ministers have urged Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray to impose a complete lockdown in the state from 8 pm tomorrow.
Tomorrow, the shops and
establishments will be closed during the day. Earlier, the Maharashtra government
had announced that grocery and food shops will remain open only between 7 am to
11 am till May 1, in a bid to curb the alarming surge in coronavirus cases.
All grocery, vegetable
shops, fruit vendors, dairies, bakeries, confectioneries, all types of food
shops, including chicken, mutton, poultry, fish shops related to agricultural
implements and farm produce, pet food shops, shops related to materials for
impending rainy season for individuals as well as for organizations can remain
open only between 7 am and 11 am.
“We have made our
request. Now it is up to the Chief Minister to take the final call,” Rajesh Tope
said.
“We need a serious
lockdown. All the ministers have told CM that we want it like last year. The final
decision would be taken by CM in one or two days because shutting down trains
and mass transport services would also have effect on the essential services.
we don’t want the essential services to be impacted,” Tope said.
The state has been adding
50,000 COVID-19 caseloads everyday over the last two weeks. The government has
imposed various other restrictions under the state's `Break the chain' program
to control the spread of the virus.
Maharashtra cabinet has
decided to cancel 10th standard Board exams while the 12th standard exams would
be held as of now.
