Chennai: As always happens in the
IPL fixtures, the first match between defending champions Mumbai Indians
against the Virat Kohli led franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore kicked off on
an exciting note.
Required 160 to win RCB scampered
home with two wickets to spare in the last ball of the match. The hero of the
day was RCB’s Harshal Patel who bowled a dream spell of 4 overs picking up
5-27, his first 5 wicket hall in all the IPLs.
Mumbai were sitting pretty at 128
for three after 15 overs but the last 5 overs only yielded 31 runs with the
loss of 6 wickets thanks to some disciplined bowling by the RCB bowlers. For
Mumbai Indians it was Chris Lynn who smashed and top scored 49 of 35 balls and
Surya Kumar Yadav who made 31 of 23 balls.
RCB did not actually get off to a
flier with Washington Sundar (10) opening with Virat Kohli (who made 33 runs of
29 balls). But with the advent of Glenn Maxwell (39 runs of 28 balls) saw the
change of fortune for RCB. After the skipper and Maxwell’s dismissal it was
left to Mr. 360 degress A B De Villiers who smashed 48 of 27 balls before
Harshal Patel stole the single of the last ball to hand over RCB their first
victory in the first match of IPL 2021.
