Kolkata: A colourful treat was in store for a select audience at the ITC Sonar Bangla on Saturday March 25. Curated by Sangeeta Datta and presented by Prabha Khaitan Foundation, the outdoor event was held in the Sunderbans lawns, in keeping with social distancing and other protocols in place on the eve of Dol Jatra.
Renowned cultural icons showcased their love for this much awaited
Spring Festival. They included Dona Ganguly with her students from
Dikshamanjari who performed Odissi dance, Priti Patel and her Anjika dance
company who performed Manipuri dance; Sangeeta Datta and Baithak artistes performed
Tagore and Rabindrik style; Nadam performed Kathak and Tanushree Shankar and
her dance company put up the Uday Shankar style of dance. It was indeed a rare
treat to watch such seasoned dancers in solo pieces.
Poetry readings by well known Bengali poet Srijato and theatre
personality Soumitra Mitra from the works of Rabindranath Tagore and Atul
Prasad Sen added another dimension to the vibrant and colourful evening.
Sangeeta Datta said : ”I have grown up in a musical atmosphere where
Basant Utsab was celebrated every year. I run Baithak which introduces the Indian
arts to young audiences. The new flowers, the riot of colours in Nature, the
full moon on Dol Purnima all hold a magical romance. I wanted to bring the
incredible variety of performance traditions, evoke Radha Krishna and Holi and
create a celebratory event in the midst of this terrible pandemic. This is truly
a special evening where I am thrilled to see so many people gathered to celebrate
life and nature through the medium of music, dance and poetry.“
