Cannes red carpet or a circus for influencers: Somy Ali says showing face and a selfie has taken priority

The Cannes Film Festival is in its 78th edition. While a lot of Indian actors walked the prestigious red carpet at the French Riviera, this year saw an increase in the attendance of influencers, making the movie buffs wonder whether the festival is losing its core purpose and is looking for more in terms of visibility rather than its main focus—movies.

Former Bollywood actress and humanitarian Somy Ali who runs her NGO, No More Tears, opened up about this ongoing debate and admitted that Cannes is every actor’s dream, but she stressed that it has lost its charm. She said, “It’s become every actor’s checklist that must be a part of their journey. It’s lost its very essence due to the overwhelming pressure of being a part of the festival in some way at any cost. That’s what eventually happens with awards and these festivals as they lose their authenticity. Showing face and a selfie on the red carpet has taken priority over anything else that truly matters.”

However, Somy was quick to admit that she would be a hypocrite if she said she wouldn’t attend it if she were invited. She said, “Why would anyone want to miss out on an opportunity? That’s what it’s boiled down to, and I want to be a part of the process too. These events become so saturated with time and the energy people are putting out there, yet it’s a necessity to be present.”

“The Gram has killed everything that would be genuine and meaningful. Lives revolve around selfies, including videos of atrocities taking place. It’s a sad conundrum for our youth and those who are creating real art. However, once the Gram facade gets boring, something else will devour us,” she added. Somy emphasized that it’s just how things are today, where everything is just for the social media platform. “That’s what we are leaving behind for our children. There’s no escaping it. When vulnerability is lacking so intensely amongst the entire population, it’s a scary world for all of us,” she ended.
