Clash of self-respect and misunderstandings

Cast: Akshay Kumar, Emraan Hasmi, Nushrratt Bharuccha, Diana Penty, Abhimanyu Singh. Mahesh Kishen Thakur, Meghna Malik, Akashdeep Sabir

Rating: 3*

The film is a true copy of Prithviraj Sukumaran’s (also a producer of this film) Malayalam film Driving License (2019). Director Raj Mehta (Good Newwz & Jug Jugg Jeeyo) once again does a commendable job and incorporates many real-life incidents. He keeps the film simple and does not make the film over-massy. He could have shortened the length (143 minutes), but that doesn’t make the film boring. Credit to him for getting some fine performances out of both Akshay Kumar (a role that suited him and to which he has done justice) and Emraan Hashmi (who does not go overboard).

A die-hard fan of superstar Vijay Kumar (Akshay), RTO sub-inspector Om Prakash Agarwal (Emraan) and his son Gabbu along with his wife Minti (Nushrratt Bharuccha in a limited screen time) reside in Bhopal. Om Prakash and his son always see the opening show of Vijay’s films. Om is super overjoyed when he learns that the superstar & his wife Naina (an underplaying Diana Penty) is coming to Bhopal to shoot for the film ‘Falak Tak’ He reaches there with Gabbu to take a selfie with the superstar but is disappointed when they cannot get one due to the thousands of fans who have come to see Vijay. However, opportunity greets Om when the corporator Vimla Tiwari (a super Meghna Malik) requests the inspector to issue a driving licence to Vijay who had lost his licence in Mumbai and did not have a duplicate one. Om Prakash has only one request - get Vijay to the RTO office and get a selfie clicked with the superstar. However, on arriving at the RTO, Vijay & Om Prakash get a rude shock, changing the equation between a die-hard fan and the superstar.

There are some others who have excelled in the acting department like Abhimanyu Singh (the other superstar Suraj Diwan) and Akashdeep Sabir (as producer Dheeraj Jaiswal) who are both fantastic. Mrunal Thakur is sizzling in the entry song. Makesh Thakur as Vijay’s manager Naveen is quite nice. Adah Sharma as Meera leaves her mark in a cameo.

The end-credit remake version of the song Main Khiladi Tu Anari is sure to make the audience dance.

Selfiee is a film that is not a typical Akshay kind of entertainer but is definitely worth watching for the face-off performances between him and Emraan.
