Mumbai: In a candid and high-impact conversation on
InControversial with Pooja Chaudhri, Aditya Uppal unpacked the relentless
eight-year struggle behind his breakout as ASP Omar Haider in Dhurandhar, while
offering rare insight into working with one of the most star-studded casts in
recent cinema.
Uppal’s journey reflects persistence over promise.
Starting in theatre at Kingdom of Dreams, he faced years of unsuccessful
auditions before stepping into advertising to support his family. Speaking
about his breakthrough moment, Uppal shared that seeing the pride in his wife
and daughters’ eyes after the film’s release was deeply validating and restored
his sense of self-worth.
On set, Uppal described a highly disciplined
environment under director Aditya Dhar. He noted that the process was
“professionally boring” in the best way, free from distractions and chaos, with
every individual focused on precision and performance, a quality that
ultimately reflects in the film.
Speaking about his co-actors, Uppal described
working with Sanjay Dutt as a surreal experience, highlighting his warmth and
grounded nature that uplifted the environment on set. He also pointed to
Ranveer Singh’s unmatched intensity, noting that the actor remains deeply
involved even off-camera, constantly observing and refining every detail,
pushing the entire team to elevate their performance.
To portray ASP Omar Haider authentically, Uppal
underwent weapon training and worked extensively on his body language and
technical detailing. He credited director Aditya Dhar for encouraging
instinctive and organic performances, which contributed to some of the film’s
most raw and impactful moments.
Addressing the ongoing conversation around the
film’s themes and the “propaganda” debate, Uppal maintained that Dhurandhar was
made with pure intent, adding that the audience response reflects a strong
connection with the story.
As Dhurandhar continues to dominate conversations,
Uppal’s breakout is positioned not as overnight success, but as the culmination
of years of perseverance validated both by audience acclaim and a deeply
personal sense of pride.
