Govinda
literally danced his way to stardom as he grooved and break danced to "I
am a street dancer..i am a street dancer". The Bollywood debut of Govinda
was nothing short of a dream. Originally earmarked for Mithun who said he
had no dates to spare, producer Pahlaj Nihalani decided to go with a young
promising lad called Govind Ahuja and the rest was history. This was also the
beginning of the celebrated and popular star pairing of Govinda with Neelam who
went on to do as many as 14 movies together.
A revenge drama
with a difference, Ilzaam which released on February 28, 1986, featured a
mindblowing score by Bappi Lahiri. From Amit Kumar's superhit solo "I am a
street dancer', and teaming up with Asha Bhosle for the romantic "Pehle pehle
pyar ki kya hai yeh deewangi:, S Janaki's sensuous "Da da dai dadai
dadai" to Shabbir Kumar-Asha Bhosle's energetic duet "Pyar kiya hain
pyar karenge" and then roping in Nazia and Zoheb Hassan for another
superhit dance number "Main aaya tere liye" all songs are still popular
with music lovers.
A poor orphan
Govinda (Ajay) meets richie rich Aarti (Neelam) and they fall in love. However,
Aarti's uncle Dhanraj (Prem Chopra) puts a spanner in the works. All of a
sudden Ajay vanishes from Aarti's life. A heartbroken Aarti is unable to
get over Ajay. A few months later she comes across Vijay (Govinda) who refuses
to recognise her. His family includes his mother (Gita Siddhart), sister
(Shraddha Verma) and an upright police officer brother Inspector Suraj Prasad
(Shatrughan Sinha). Later while investigating a crime Inspector Suraj
discovers that Ajay sings and dances on the street even as his colleagues break
into apartments to rob them. Vijay finally confesses to Aarti that he only is
Ajay but is on the run from the law as he has killed Kamal (Anita Raj) by
mistake during a stage performance for which he has been blackmailed into
turning a street dancer by night to enable a gang to rob the distracted
residents. When Ajay comes across an alive Kamal he realises that he has been
framed for a murder which never happened.
Who has framed
him, who is Kamal and does he and Aarti get their happy ending forms the rest
of the story.
Govinda's
promising debut firmly paved the way for a long dream run for the actor with
the petite Neelam giving him good company. The Shatru-Anita pairing looked a
bit forced while Raj Kiran's villainous turn was convincing. A fat Shashi
Kapoor as the police commissioner and Raj Kiran's father was the icing on the
cake.
A well-mounted
film, Ilzaam is one film which you can watch again and still enjoy the
thrills and the excellent music.
