Director Aanand L Rai engages the viewers right from the start keeping
it intriguing. The audience are eager to know as to what happens to the lead
characters and what has gone wrong between them. But yes he conveniently uses
too many cinematic liberties thus making the film lose its sheen. But the
performances of both Dhanush & Kriti Sanon elevate the film and it is
because of this that Rai needs special mention.
The rebellious and violent Shankar Gurukkal (Dhanush) is the president
of DUSU. In the same college studies Mukti Behniwal (Kriti Sanon) who is
pitching her thesis on the transformation of any violent person if treated and
handled in a correct manner. The professors (Jaya Bhattacharya &
Chittaranjan Tripathy) tells Mukti that there is no base in her thesis as they
see Gurukkal thrashing another student and chasing him. Mukti takes it as a
challenge to reform him. Shankar initially does not agree to Mukti’s conditions
but falls in love with her despite her telling him that she is only doing her
work and she is not in love with him. Shankar changes for her and Mukti
completes her PhD. It is then Shankar realises Mukti’s feelings for him and he
decides to burn down everything with his wrath. They meet after 7 years and
that is where the film takes a dramatic turn.
Dhanush is simply remarkable. His raw fury and intensity is a treat to
watch. Matching him is Kriti Sanon who delivers a brauvara performance. Her
role is a complex one and she delivers it with ease. Prakash Raj as Shankar’s
father is brilliant. Tota Roy Choudhury as Yashwant Behniwal the father of
Mukti is another surprise of the film. Priyanshu Painyuli as Ved Shankar’s best
friend is adorable. Vineet Kumar Singh in a special appearance as commanding
officer Sekhawat is very good. In a cameo, Mohd Zeeshan Ayyub as Murari
respises the role from Raanjhanaa (2013) and is wonderful.
A R Rahman’s music lifts the film. Both the versions of ‘jigarthanda’
impresses. ‘Chinnaware’ being a completely Tamil song, stands out. ‘Ladki
Jaisi’ is good.
Story & screenplay by Himanshu Sharma & Neeraj Yadav are
engaging but also confused at times. Dialogues deserve special mention.
This intense love saga has great performances which elevates the film
but is too long which pulls it down a bit.
