Director Shane Black teams up with actor Mark Wahlberg and executive producer Robert Downey Jr. in the film Play Dirty which is unnecessarily violent and mildly engaging. The film boasts of fantastic chases which are the highlight plus one has to leave one’s brain behind and just enjoy this violent heist comedy (oh yes dollops of mindless ones).
The film starts with a robbery at a racetrack that goes horribly wrong. The master thief Parker (Mark Wahlberg) manages to escape with his life after the getaway driver Zen (Rosa Salazer) manages to pump bullets into the the other crew members of the heist gang including his co-conspirator Philly (Thomas Jane). Swearing revenge Parker sets out to find Zen with the help of an unsuccessful theatre actor with a criminal background Grofield (LaKeith Stanfield). Finally on finding Zen, they come to know that Zen is planning to rob a country and the stakes are much higher.
Mark Wahlberg is just passable without his usual charisma. He is good in the action scenes but has a grumpy expression most of the times. Rosa Salazer is sizzling and steals the show. LaKeith Stanfield adds to the fun quotient. As the married couple Keegan- Michael Key and Claire Lovering as Ed & Brenda McKay are adorable to say the least. Billionaire Mark Cuban makes a cameo appearance.
The action is both anxious and energetic and will be a treat to the action lovers.
