The Uttam Kumar Memorial Cultural Committee
hosted "Uttam Smaran Sandhya" at Uttam Manch on September 3,
the day the legendary actor stepped into his 100th birth anniversary.
The eminent guests present on the occasion included Kalyan Sen Barat, Sraboni Sen, Trina Saha, Sampa Kundu, RJ Roy, Swagatalaxmi Dasgupta, Ankan, Sisipia Banerjee, Diganta Bagchi and Samik Pal, Dolon Roy, Dr Purnendu Roy among many others. The chief guest was MLA Debashish Kumar who along with the esteemed guests lit the inaugural lamp and garlanded the Mahanayak's portrait.
The evening saw a musical tribute to the Tollywood
legend. Well known singers sang hit tracks from his films even as the audience
got to see the actual song on the gigantic screen behind. The songs included
two Rabindra Sangeets by Sraboni Sen, Sukher majhe tomake peyechhi (Jadi
Jantem) and Amai Mallika bole jokhon (Bicharak).
Sampa Kundu sang Gaaner mon (Agni Pariksha), Ei
mayabi tithi (Sonar Harin) and Chole jete jete (Mon Niye). Soumik Pal sang a
strota from Sanyasi Raja followed by Surjer dobar pala aashe (Indrani) and
Prithibi bodle gechhey (Anand Ashram). He went on to sing two duets with
Sisipiya, Nir chhoto khati nei (Indrani) and the evergreen Eei path jodi na
shesh hoi (Saptapadi).

Each year, a legendary living artist is honoured
with the Uttam Smarak Samman (Uttam Memorial Honour)./Life time Achievement
Award. Esteemed personalities like Madhabi Mukherjee, Lily Chakraborty, Soma
Dey and Shakuntala Barua have received this honour in the past. This year, a
health certificate was conferred on Sanat Kumar Mahanta,
veteran technician and assistant director.
