Akshay Kumar, please spare us the agony of doing true stories. It’s not your forte. You need to show some dedication and hard work by getting into the character’s skin. But no! You need to finish the work in 30-45 days! If you want to turn out into a factory machine, so be it. You will burn out faster. Plus, you have another advantage of burning out sooner- your acting prowess leaves a lot to be desired since your debut film.

An excellent story on Coal India officer Jaswant Gill who rescued 65 miners by building a capsule-like lift in Mahabir Colliery in the Raniganj area of West Bengal is absolutely massacred by the twin forces of director Tinu Suresh Desai (his Rustom may have been a fluke) and an artificial Akshay Kumar portraying the fearless engineer Gill.

The film is marred by horrible VFX and shoddy production values. Yash Chopra’s now classic Kaala Patthar (1979) inspired by the Chasnala mining tragedy (which has references here too) was way, way ahead despite having no VFX. The latter film had the principal character having a lot of layers and ultimately seeking redemption in the depths of the coal mines, but Mission Raniganj has the spotlight on Akshay Kumar the star, and not Jaswant Singh Gill the character, and on issues surrounding the disaster.

Surely, the late Jaswant Singh Gill known as Capsule Gill, deserved a better film with a better actor and a director!

It’s pointless writing about the acting caliber of the other supporting actors because they do not leave any impression on you.
