FILM REVIEW: Retribution

Cast: Liam Neeson, Jack Champion, Emily Kuschem Arian Moayed, Matthew Modine, Embeth Davidtz, Lilly Aspell

Rating: 2/5

Five minutes into the film and one knows that this is your average Liam Neeson which you have been watching over the past few years.

The veteran actor looks tired and burnt out in a film so obviously a cash grab since this doesn’t have substance or style. He should probably stop doing such films, opting for more character-based films where he will be able to showcase his acting talent.

When a mysterious caller puts a bomb under his car seat, Matt Turner (Neeson) begins a high-speed chase across the city to complete a specific series of tasks. With his kids trapped in the backseat and a bomb that will explode if they get out of the car, an everyday commute becomes a twisted game of life or death as Matt follows the stranger’s increasingly dangerous instructions in a race against time to save his family.

Matthew Modine is fine with the kids just about okay. Even the car chase sequence fails to induce an adrenaline rush, as it’s just so bland. The dialogues are childish and stupid. This might as well have been directed and written by an AI.

Retribution is a poorly written, directed, and acted thriller that doesn’t even earn the thriller title. It’s basically ‘Speed’ in the Liam Neeson “I love my family” universe.
