A lackluster climax pulls down this thriller

Cast: Shailene Woodley, Ben Mendelsohn, Jovan Adepo, Ralph Ineson, Rosemary Dunsmore

Rating: 3/5

Damián Szifron's newest feature is a mixed bag of some thrills and some dumb decisions. While most of the film is quite thrilling and will keep you on the edge of your seat, the last 20 minutes or so spoil the film completely with its bizarre change of tone and pace.

The film starts with a mass murder which the police have no clue as to who did it. A blast in a building follows. A talented young but troubled police officer of the Baltimore Police Department Eleanor (Shailene Woolley) is recruited by the Chief investigator of the FBI, Lanmark (Ben Mendelssohn) to help track down the sniper killer involved in several mass massacres. Because of her own psyche, the department feels that Eleanor may be the only person who can understand the mind of the killer’s own tortured psyche and bring him to book.

Szifron flaunts his directorial skills with an average screenplay where the characters are not fleshed out that much. The performances are very good all around, with Shailene Woodley and Ben Mendelsohn giving it their all. The cinematography adds to the film with its weird angles that work great.

To Catch a Killer is an edge-of-the-seat thriller till the last 20 minutes or so.
