Lovers of the Evil Dead series rejoice!

Rating: 4*

Lee Cronin understands what the fans of the Evil Dead series want from a new installment, he knows we need over-the-top gore, goofiness, a bloodbath ending, and profane demons. He simply does all that and makes a damn good new installment in this already-perfect series. This has got the goofiness of Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead 2 and the gore and bloodbath of Fede Álvarez’s 2013 Evil Dead, and it’s something different, something original. There are homages to the previous Evil Dead films to various horror films, with some of the most evident ones being It Chapter 2 and The Shining. The set pieces are over the top like every Evil Dead film. The gore is toned down compared to the 2013 Evil Dead but it’s still pretty gory at times. If you want to see a funny-at-times, gory-at-all-times film that features a scene where a grater is being used to cut a woman’s leg, then Evil Dead Rises is just the film for you.

Two sisters find an ancient book that gives birth to bloodthirsty demons that run amok in a Los Angeles apartment building and thrusts them into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable.

Lee Cronin directs the hell out of the film adding whatever he can in the tight runtime of 96 minutes. The cinematography is crazy and weird. The music is pretty average, and the performances are good with every actor giving it their all and succeeding in making the viewers like and feel for the character, but Alyssa Sutherland really shines with her brilliant over-the-top performance

Evil Dead Rises is not elevated horror and neither is it trashy B-grade horror, it’s in the middle and it’s a must-watch for all horror film fans.
