For all big Noah Baumbach fan, White Noise is rather disappointing. This is surely his weakest in terms of the screenplay, the direction and especially the pacing.

Jack Gladney, professor of Hitler studies at The-College-on-the-Hill, husband to Babette, and father to four children/stepchildren, is torn asunder by a chemical spill from a rail car that releases an “Airborne Toxic Event”, forcing Jack to confront his biggest fear – his own mortality.

There were a lot of instances throughout the film where one switches off and contemplates whether to continue watching it. This doesn’t feel like a Noah Baumbach film. There is the typical Baumbach dialogue and characters but it’s more like a Greg Mottola film. It has its fair share of philosophy and humour, but the humour doesn’t work most of the time.

Adam Driver, Greta Gerwig and Don Cheadle give terrific performances, but this doesn’t make the film worth watching. The cinematography is good but very unlike Baumbach who mostly works in a more intimate level in this field.

White Noise needs to be re-watched to appreciate and possibly even like it.
