Amar Kaushik has proven himself to be a capable filmmaker in the past and his films were enjoyable. His latest venture ‘Bhediya’ is an attempt at creating a universe and having crossovers in films while providing a social message about the environment.

Inspired by legendary folklore rooted in Arunachal Pradesh, Bhediya tells the story of Bhaskar, a man who gets bitten by a mythical wolf and begins to transform into the creature himself. As Bhaskar and his ragtag buddies try to find answers, he is worried that the monster in him will wipe out human existence in the local town.

The horror-comedy has more comedy than horror with the comedy working big time like when Himesh Reshammiya is made fun of and the toilet humour scenes. There are references to Jaani Dushman (1979), Junoon  (1992) and The Jungle Book’s eternal favourite number “chaddi pahan ke phool khila hai phool khila hai”.

Unfortunately, Kaushik fails to flesh out the characters especially Kriti Sanon’s as Dr Anika the bumbling vet with a horrendous wig. Varun Dhawan’s character too is criminally underwritten with no backstory. Abhishek Banerjee and Deepak Dobriyal steal the show with their excellent comic timing.

Paalin Kabak effectively voices the angst of the NE during his diatribe about how the rest of India perceives them,

The visual effects are good, especially the close-up shots of the wolf and Varun’s transformation scenes from insaan to bhediya. The camera pans lovingly on the virgin locales of Arunachal Pradesh and we are sure many tourists will be making a beeline for the picturesque hill resorts for their next holiday.

Kaushik leads the film where it is destined to go, but the viewers do dose off in the middle only to wake up with start towards the last 20 minutes or so. Bhediya is a good watch, but it could have been better.
