Lifeless snooze fest

Cast: Nathalie Emmanuel, Thomas Doherty, Sean Pertwee, Hugh Skinner, Carol Ann Crawford, Alana Boden, Stephanie Corneliussen, Courtney Taylor, Virág Bárány

Rating: 1/5

Long gone are the days of films like ‘The Shining’ and ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ that scared the daylights out of you. Horror fans have to be content with films like ‘The Invitation’ which are dull and boring, barely sending a shiver up your spine.

The story is simple enough. After her mother’s death, Evie is approached by an unknown cousin who invites her to a lavish wedding in the English countryside. Soon, she realizes a gothic conspiracy is afoot and must fight for survival as she uncovers twisted secrets in her family’s history.

A film that tries to be a satire on the elite class, has been done to death a million times before much more effectively. It features some of the most banal expositions and jump scares ever in a horror film that even an infant wouldn’t find vaguely scary. Most of the scenes were shot in such dim locations, that the strain on the eyes trying to decipher what’s going on in the dark just isn’t worth the effort.

Jessica M. Thompson’s second directorial is nothing like her first; it’s bland and lacks any sort of substance and it’s a good thing that Sam Raimi couldn’t produce it. Both Blair Butler’s screenplay and Autumn Eakin’s cinematography are below average. The performances are nothing to speak of with Nathalie Emmanuel desperately trying to enliven  to this lifeless film and failing miserably.
