Ennio is a documentary that will make any cinephile
or a follower of mainstream cinema jump for joy.
How can you make a documentary on the
greatest film composer of all time? Giuseppe Tornatore answers the question as
he directs this heartfelt and informative (unlike many documentaries today)
documentary masterfully (as he’s done with his other films Cinema Paradiso,
Malena, The Legend of 1900 etc). It’s sheer joy to look at and hear Morricone
speaking about music and his life in the most charming and heartfelt way. What
can be said about Morricone? So much that it would take more than a day of
constant talking.
Even with its 157-minute runtime, it still
falls short and Tornatore isn’t able to showcase some of Morricone’s best works
(Salo, Malena, etc).
Filmmakers and composers appear and they
all express their love for Morricone. It will make a cinephile truly happy to
see and hear that. The documentary almost plays like a Morricone composition,
whether it be intentional or unintentional.
A film that deserves to be seen on the biggest
screen possible, Ennio is a heartfelt tribute to cinema’s greatest composer.
