May 1 saw Chaitown Community’s grand opening of its new community centre on Gobindopur Road in Jodhpur Gardens. Present at the opening were Sarbari Bhattacharya, joint assistant director, intelligence; Rupkatha Sarkar, principal, La Martiniere for Girls School and Rev Patrick Joseph led by Elizabeth Decker, director, Chaitown Community.

The guests were given a walk through all the facilities and activities available in the building. At the CrossFit gym on the ground floor fitness expert Manan talked about CrossFit training going on to give a demo with fellow instructor William Nag. Pawan Kumar Singh, a second dan black belt, who will be holding karate classes every week, showed some swift karate moves. The first floor is divided into a music room, a dance studio, and a storytelling room. Contemporary dance exponent Shayan treated the guests to “Ugly Dancing” at the dance studio. Regular dance classes along with Zumba training are in the offing.

Members can enroll for lessons in keyboard, guitar, vocal training, songwriting, music production, and videos in the well-equipped music room while the storytelling section is a space for budding poets and authors to share their creations with an appreciative audience. You can also sign up for “Storybird” a one-hour story reading session for children.

The lit-up terrace was the last stop where musicians jammed to contemporary numbers in the company of puchkas, jhalmuri, and yummy pastries.

Chaitown promises to serve its customers healthy food along with their cuppa to round things up at the café.

Set up in 2021 as a culture-based creative company where people can live, breathe and experience art, Chaitown Community reaches out to all those creative people out there in Kolkata to come to share their expertise along with sharpening their own skills.
