May 1 saw Chaitown Community’s grand opening of its new community centre on Gobindopur Road in Jodhpur Gardens. Present at the opening were Sarbari Bhattacharya, joint assistant director, intelligence; Rupkatha Sarkar, principal, La Martiniere for Girls School and Rev Patrick Joseph led by Elizabeth Decker, director, Chaitown Community.
The guests
were given a walk through all the facilities and activities available in the building.
At the CrossFit gym on the ground floor fitness expert Manan talked about CrossFit training going on to give a demo with fellow instructor William Nag. Pawan Kumar
Singh, a second dan black belt, who will be holding karate classes every week, showed
some swift karate moves. The first floor is divided into a music room, a dance studio, and a storytelling room. Contemporary dance exponent Shayan treated the guests
to “Ugly Dancing” at the dance studio. Regular dance classes along with Zumba training
are in the offing.
Members can
enroll for lessons in keyboard, guitar, vocal training, songwriting, music
production, and videos in the well-equipped music room while the storytelling section
is a space for budding poets and authors to share their creations with an
appreciative audience. You can also sign up for “Storybird” a one-hour story
reading session for children.
The lit-up
terrace was the last stop where musicians jammed to contemporary numbers in the
company of puchkas, jhalmuri, and yummy pastries.
Chaitown
promises to serve its customers healthy food along with their cuppa to round
things up at the café.
Set up in
2021 as a culture-based creative company where people can live, breathe and experience
art, Chaitown Community reaches out to all those creative people out there in
Kolkata to come to share their expertise along with sharpening their own skills.
