Kolkata: With reports of sporadic violence pouring in from various parts of three districts in West Bengal polling started at 7 am in 31 constituencies of these districts in the third phase of polling on April 6. Till 11 am polling percentage was reported to be 34.71 per cent.

A sector officer has been suspended by Election Commission for keeping three sets of EVMs and VVPATs in the residence of a TMC supporter in Howrah’s Uluberia.

“Tapan Sarkar, a sector officer of Sector 17 in AC 177 Uluberia Uttar
in Howrah District went with Reserve EVMs and slept at a relative’s house. This is a gross violation of the ECI’s Instructions for which the Sector Officer has been suspended and charges will be framed for major punishment,” EC said.

According to EC, the Sector Police attached to Sector Officer have also been directed to be suspended. The said the EVMs and VVPATs have been taken out of the stock and shall not be used in the polls.

Incidents of violence, allegations of ISF camp offices being vandalized have
been reported from Hooghly where the Indian Secular Front (ISF), an outfit by Pirzada Abbas Siddiqui, has fielded candidates.  ISF is a headache for the TMC, as the outfit holds sway in several parts of South 24 Parganas and Hooghly districtsamong minority dominated areas.

Over 78.5 lakh voters will exercise their franchise in Bengal. The Left Front-ISF-Congress alliance is hoping to make a mark in a three-cornered contest in the state. A total of 205 candidates are in fray, with heavyweights like former RajyaSabha MP Swapan Dasgupta, TMC minister Ashima Patra and CPI(M) leader Kanti Ganguly.
