Director Ujjwal Mitra's 'Sukanya' was finally released in cinemas on November 22, nearly 3 months after its initial August 30 release date. The film's release was postponed due to the unrest in the city and other parts of the state after the August 9 heinous rape and murder incident at RG Kar hospital. The film's premiere was held amidst the star cast and crew at the newly renovated iconic Globe Cinema in the New Market area.
Sukanya, highlighting the impact of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's Kanyashree scheme to empower girl students revolves around Durga (Shreyasha Ghosh) a girl from Gopalpur village who is caught in the crossfire of the government acquiring rural land to lay a factory. She and her widowed mother Jaya (Punam Dutta) leave for Kolkata where after many hardships Durga becomes an IPS officer and returns to Gopalpur as a top cop to settle scores with all those who had harmed her family in the past. She is revealed to be the first recipient of the Sukanya scheme started by the chief minister Maya Chattopadhyay (Koneenica Banerjee). The film harks back to the Singur incident in the first half with Maya as the opposition leader who later becomes the CM. Former TMC MP Santanu Sen plays a pivotal role as DGP Proloy Rudra and state animal resources development minister Swapan Debnath in an important political role. Kharaj Mukherjee, Pushpita Mukherjee, Sanjib Sarkar, Debranjan Nag, Barun Chakraborty, and Debashish Ganguly make up the rest of the cast.
The film is a tribute to CM Mamata Banerjee's efforts to empower the girls of the state through her various welfare schemes like the award-winning Kanyashree.
