The 17th Edition of SHORTS, the Annual Short Film Festival in Jamshedpur, concluded successfully at the Centre For Excellence. The two-day film festival, on November 23 and 24, saw a large turnout of filmmakers, film buffs and corporate personalities from the Steel City who had their thinking caps on as they watched the short films that ranged between 2 minutes and 27 minutes.

SHORTS 2024 opened with the ceremonial lamp lighting and the release of the exhibition catalogue. Govind Sharan, ex-chief of Sustainability Projects Tata Steel, was the chief guest, while Purabi Ghosh, a social and cultural activist, was the guest of honour. Jamshedpur’s hot favourite Siddhartha Sen was the anchor for the event.

Twenty short films were screened over the two days. The films were in Hindi, English, and Bengali, and there was a silent film as well. The films were made by p

rofessional, budding and student filmmakers and were from Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Ranchi, Ghatsila and Jamshedpur. They were mostly issue-based films which gave the audience much food for thought.

‘Apna Time Kab Ayega’ by Abhishek Ganguli, ‘Secrets’ by Sanjay Mishra, ‘Protibimbo’ by Soumya Chakraborty, ‘Life Time Death’ by Mini Pandey, ‘Manvi’ by Indrani Ghosh, ‘Adieu’ by Vevek Upadyay and ‘Colour The Cloud’ by Titas Chakraborty need special mention in this regard. There were two films from the Film & Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune.

Apart from the screening of short films, the film festival boasted of special lectures and business announcements by eminent citizens of Jamshedpur which added value to the entire show.

Take 5 Communications, a Creative Organization in Kolkata, has been organizing this short film festival in association with The Society for Promotion of Professional Excellence, Tata Steel since 2008. It is now the longest-running film festival in Jamshedpur and a much-awaited event. And the wait will be over in November 2025 when SHORTS will be back with its 18th edition.
