Renowned choreographer Shiamak Davar was awarded the prestigious Kalpana Sham Munshi Lifetime Achievement Award for Performing Arts by the Rotary Club of Bombay on October 8. This recognition celebrates Davar’s remarkable contributions to the world of dance over a career spanning more than 25 years, solidifying his status as a pioneering force in contemporary dance.
Davar, often
referred to as the “Guru of Contemporary Dance,” has played a pivotal role in
shaping the dance landscape in India. His innovative choreography and ability
to blend various dance styles have captivated audiences and inspired countless
dancers and performers. From Bollywood to stage productions, his influence can
be seen in a myriad of performances that resonate with energy and creativity.
The award ceremony, held in Mumbai, brought together dignitaries, and members of the Rotary Club to celebrate Davar's exceptional journey. He recounted a memorable moment when he performed for Prince William and Kate Middleton, sharing, “While I was performing, William nearly got up to join the party! Can you imagine? The future King of England wants to dance! It reminded me that dance knows no boundaries and can connect us all. When I met the Queen later, I told her, 'You know, William was really a lively one!' She responded, 'What do you expect? I’d probably think he’d jump on the table!'”
