The Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Thursday, in a letter to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, urged her to resolve the issues of junior doctors, who are on fast-unto-death in Kolkata from Saturday and expressing concern over the health condition of the junior doctors. The condition of Aniket Mahato, one of the seven junior doctors on fast-unto-death at Esplanade in Kolkata, is critical. Mahato, had to be hospitalized after Thursday midnight when his medical condition deteriorated drastically due to continuous fasting.

According to his fellow junior doctors who were also on hunger strike along with him, Mahato’s health condition started deteriorating on Thursday morning and became critical the same night. Since Mahato himself is attached to R.G. Kar as a junior doctor he was shifted to the same hospital. The doctors who examined him decided to get him admitted to the intensive care unit there.

The fast-unto-death death agitation was started initially by six junior doctors from different medical colleges and hospitals on Saturday evening. Mahato joined the hunger strike on Sunday evening. His fellow hunger-strikers claimed that despite his deteriorating health Mahato’s mental strength to continue with the fasting agitation was still intact.

Acclaimed city-based medical practitioner Subrana Goswami, who had been a leading face of the doctors’ movement on this issue, told a section of the media that it would be more unfortunate if the state government does not consider the demand of the junior doctors with empathy even after what has happened with Mahato.

“The medical condition of the other six junior doctors who are on hunger strike is more or less stable till now but it is not possible to say what will be their state tomorrow. So it is high time that the state government considers their demands with empathy,” Goswami said.
