Very 'low' patti

Cast: Kajol Devgan, Kriti Sanon, Shaheer Sheikh, Tanvi Azmi, Brijendra Kala

Rating: 2*

OTT: Netflix

Director Shashank Chaturvedi's idea of domestic abuse is well intended but to treat it like a thriller is where he falters big time. So we get neither a thriller (what it looked like in the trailer) nor an emotional drama. What keeps you hooked is the performance of Kriti Sanon in a double role which she has done full justice to. Both her characters of Saumya and Shailee are made distinctive by her portrayals. For once Kajol takes a backseat but still somehow manages to shine with her usual strong screen presence. Yes, certain scenes of domestic abuse will wrench your gut out but otherwise, you tend to get confused with the proceedings going on. There are a lot of 'whys' left unanswered and that's what takes the sheen out of 'Do Patti'.

Shailee Pundir (Kriti Sanon) is jealous of her twin sister Saumya Pundir (Sanon again) and is sent off to a hostel. Her jealousy and resentment towards her sister grows manifold and she is hell-bent on destroying her 'drama queen' sister's life at any cost. Finishing her higher studies, Shailee returns and comes to stay with her sister and their nanny (Tanvi Azmi) who they address as Ammaji. Saumya meets Dhruv Sood (Shaheer Sheikh), a rich guy, with an influential father, who runs an adventure sport in Uttarakhand. He helps Saumya to get over her fear of flying and paragliding and she falls for him. But he gets attracted to the confident Shailee but gets married to Saumya because of Shailee's rash behaviour. After marriage, Dhruv resorts to domestic violence and that is where cop-cum-lawyer Vidya Jyoti (Kajol) steps in.

You will love to hate Shaheer Sheikh. He gives a good performance. Tanvi Azmi is fair in a supporting role. Brijendra Kala as Hawaldar Katoch is wasted and so are Vivek Mushran as Deepak Pundir the chachu of the girls and Prachee Shah Pandya as Shobhna Pundir, the mother of the twins. She has no dialogues.

Despite the story (Kanika Dhillon) adding to a dash of mystery, it fails to keep up the suspense as everything becomes very easy and all of a sudden. Even the court scenes fail to impress. Rather too childish.  This is Kriti Sanon's first film as a producer and despite her performance, the film is a big letdown.
