Vijay bhavatu!
Cast: Vijay (in a
double role), Prashanth, Prabhu Deva, Mohan, Jayaram, Sneha, Laila
Rating: 3*
When Vijay is there, that too in a double role, then do you actually need a story? No! Vijay will anyway mesmerise you with his gimmicks, dances and trademark swag and that he does precisely in this film. It is great to see a villainous avatar of Vijay who effortlessly pulls it up with a stunning act. You will love to hate him in the role of Jeevan / Sanjay. This film is made especially for the Vijay fanbase who should lap up the entertainer despite a predictable and thin storyline.
When a former Special
Anti-Terrorism Squad (SATS) agent Rajeev Menon (Mohan) turns rogue in 2008, the
other agents led by M S Gandhi (Vijay) along with his immediate superior Nazeer
(Jayaram) and his colleagues Sunil (Prashanth) and Kalyan Sundaram (Prabhu
Deva) set out to retrieve stolen uranium from Menon. The mission is foiled and
tragedy strikes. Cut to 2024 where Gandhi is leading a retired life when
unexpected events force him to re-join the SATS to prevent a terrorist attack
in India. As the commentator says in the final cricket match between CSK and MI
"Age doesn't matter! A lion is always a lion", Gandhi is back in the
espionage world. But a secret and conspiracy await him and his old team-mates.
Writer-director Venkat
Prabhu makes an out-an-out actioner with no pretense of making a slick spy
thriller. The film has a lot of unanswered loopholes which are overlooked
because of Vijay's double role. The pace of the film is also uneven and the VFX
looks gimmicky. Even Vijay's de-aging looks are quite funny actually. The last
sequence uses MS Dhoni hitting a six in the final ball of the match and Vijay's
MS Gandhi killing the villain in the end.
Good to see Mohan
(Mouna Raagam anyone!) & Prashanth (remember Jeans & Thiruda Thiruda)
after a long time. Prabhu Deva & Jayaram are also fine. A lovely surprise
cameo by Siva Karthikeyan and a sizzling Trisha Krishnan add to the value. Yogi
Babu is his usual funny self.
The film is 3 hours
long and a bit of trimming would have helped in making the film tighter.
Vijay's stunts and dances are the highlights of the film and also make the
film watchable for these. So if you are a Vijay fan, you are surely going to
lap up this film. Do not miss the post-credit scenes.
